Oh my goodness, what a cutie pie! I had the opportunity to take photos of little Carter this week. Talk about a future heartbreaker! He was so calm during the newborn photo session, it made my job super easy.
The parents wanted a bit of a "rustic" look, so I was able to break out my wicker baskets and wood floor backdrops to try to capture that look.
I also had a chance to use the custom wooden airplane prop I had built by an Amish man I know back in my hometown. This little pilot is just so cute! I was very impressed that he was ok on the wood but I am so glad that he did because the photos turned out fantastic.
We were worried that the wood was too shiny and might give off a blue glare, but instead it showed Carter's reflection, which I thought was fantastic.
Toward the end of the photo session, we got to be a little dramatic with the lighting and do some cool low-key shots. I've had many parents ask me how I got this shot. I'll let you in on a little secret... Beanbag! The baby wasn't even in the air, I just had the parents lift the fabric on both sides to give the appearance of being suspended mid-air, but in fact, he was perfectly safe and content.
I think my favorite thing about this photo is the softness on his back and bottom, almost as if he is fading away to a far away land full of sweet dreams (and probably milk).
I love black and white photography, and low-key lighting helps make photos look truly unique. Even mom and dad got in for some photos! They were comforting him because he started to fuss a little bit so I quick took the opportunity to take a photo of this beautiful parenting moment.
Isn't is amazing how a man and a woman can know so well what to do once they actually have the baby in their arms? Yes, it may take a little practice but once you get to know your baby a little bit, you figure out what your baby likes, how they like it and when they need you most. It's a beautiful thing to witness and a privilege to capture.
At the end of the day, this session was a blast! The parents were so kind and you could tell that they loved each other and their son so much. I am very happy to have met them and sweet baby Carter.
